Last year Starbucks launched a mobile payments feature in Seattle and Silicon Valley. The payments feature is available through the Starbucks Card Mobile App for iPhone in the U.S. The app lets people check their Starbucks Card balance, add money to their account with a credit card, and make purchases at Starbucks. At checkout, the app generates a barcode on the device’s screen, which is then swiped over a 2-D scanner.
The success of the scheme has led Starbucks to expand the pilot to another major metropolis, New York City. It’s only a matter of time before this type of payments appears in the UK . . .how convenient!
